Caricaturing California Dudes!

Here's a caricature I was commissioned by my aunt in California to do of my cute, little nephew and his proud grandfather (also my uncle.) This had a fairly tight deadline to begin with; on or close to Christmas. It become extremely tight (a few days) because of that lovely, 6-day ice storm/power-outage some of us up North experienced the week before Christmas.

Despite that harrowing experience and less-than-ideal working conditions, I managed to pull it off, please the client (and the subject matter!) and have fun drawing this at the same time; no small feat.

This is one of those illustrations that I'll file under "abandoned but perhaps not quite finished." I may revisit it sometime in the not-too-distant future to add additional layers of color, highlights, shadows, etc. Overall though, I'm pleased with how this turned out. It looks like my Uncle Jim and cousin Kai, which is always a plus when one is doing a caricature!

What's reflected in Grampa's glasses?

Not sure what that reflection is Mrs. Chili. It's probably something completely the opposite, but I'm going to guess and say that it's a swimming pool.

Not finished? This is DONE! It looks great! The flat color is completely appropriate and it doesn't feel unfinished. The cartoony and simplified look is perfect. Love the black outline on the foreground folks compared to the colorized background elements. The caricatures really pop! It's DONE I tell ya! Good job!

Thanks Robert! I like this version and have it safely saved, but think it might be interesting at some point to do a more involved version with that digital painting/glazing technique that we're both so fond of. We'll see. I have a bunch of other projects planned for 2009.

Great likenesses. And I like the reflection in Jim’s sunglasses. Also, the flora in the back really sells the geography. Definitely unmistakeable for the east coast.

Glad you like the caricature Dave. You have a good eye or two! Those are indeed California trees and not the variety that are collecting snow and ice along the east coast at the moment.
